Lead times

Our current lead time is around eight weeks, and most commissions are delivered within 16 to 20 weeks. Simpler pieces can be quicker. Larger programmes — whole houses, listed buildings, joinery phased around a main contractor’s build — can run for a year or more, and those we plan around the build programme rather than a single date. Send us the drawings or a schedule and we will give you a realistic date for your job.

Bespoke doors in Suffolk

Every door we make is drawn, made, finished and hung by our own people from the workshop on Stonham Road at Mickfield, between Stowmarket and Debenham. That means the people who set out the frame, cut the joints and apply the finish are the same people who fit it to an opening that is rarely square, and who come back if anything needs attention.

We work across Suffolk and into Norfolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire, as well as London and the Home Counties — internal doors and casings for a whole house, front doors, and replacement doors matched to originals in period and listed buildings.

How a bespoke wooden door is actually built

A front door is opened and shut more often than any other piece of joinery in a house, and it is the only one that has weather on one side and heating on the other. That is why we build them the way we do.

• Mortice-and-tenon joints, not dowels and not staples.
• Solid timber stiles and rails.
• Panels in solid timber, or in veneered MDF where stability across a wide panel matters more than the last word in authenticity.
• Glazing in single, double or slim-line units, with traditional bars where the door calls for them.
• Finished by hand: painted, oiled, stained or French-polished.

Timber for bespoke doors, and what each one is for

We work in oak, walnut, mahogany and painted hardwood, and the choice is usually settled by whether the door is being painted or left to show its grain.

• Oak is the usual answer for a front door that is meant to be seen. It is dense and sturdy, stands up to impact and weather, insulates well, and resists rot and pests. It needs very little looking after beyond cleaning and resealing the finish now and then.
• Utile is what we use for frames, and for painted doors where stability matters. Strong, consistent and well behaved.
• Sapele is the most economical hardwood we offer, normally primed and painted. It moves a little more through the seasons than utile.
• Iroko and teak are oiled rather than painted, and suit exposed exterior work. Teak is the most durable timber we use and by a long way the most expensive.
• Walnut and mahogany for internal doors where the door is part of the furniture of the room.

Doors for listed buildings and period properties

Where a door is being replaced in a listed building, we measure the original and reproduce it: section sizes, mouldings, panel proportions and all. We do this regularly on conservation projects across East Anglia, London and the Home Counties. If there is no original left to measure, we work from photographs, from what survives elsewhere in the house, and from the conservation officer’s notes.

Concealed jib doors and doors set within panelling are a regular part of this work. So are matching architraves, so that a new door does not announce itself as new. Where doors are going into a panelled room we usually draw the two together — see timber panelling.

Send the schedule from your architect, photographs of a door you want matched, or nothing more than a description of the opening. We survey, draw and price, normally within a week. Everything is made at our workshop at Mickfield near Stowmarket and hung by our own site team.
